The following message was sent from President Mark B. Rosenberg to the university community onMarch 25, 2011:
Dear members of the university community:
We are now in the third week of the 2011 Legislative Session and our team is hard at work making the case for continued investment in higher education and particularly in FIU.
The State of Florida faces challenging economic times with a projected revenue shortfall of more than $3.7 billion. The decisions the Legislature makes will be critical to the future of our State and our institution and will directly impact how we are able to serve our students, engage with our community and fulfill our strategic plan.
Although it is very early in the legislative session, we are carefully monitoring budget and other substantive recommendations that will have an impact on the SUS and FIU.
While the governor?s recommended operating budget does not reduce our recurring state appropriations, the initial recommendations from the House and Senate will reduce our recurring appropriations by approximately 10 and 8 percent respectively. These reductions could be partially offset by a 15 percent tuition increase. The House is recommending a 5 percent base tuition increase and a 10 percent tuition differential fee increase.
Additionally, the House budget recommendation will reduce appropriations to the Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine by $2 million, roughly an 8 percent reduction. Full funding is a central element of a successful Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) accreditation process. The Senate draft budget, on the other hand, comes very close to fully funding our College of Medicine.
The climate makes this an excellent time for me to update you on our legislative priorities for the upcoming 2011-12 fiscal year and ask you to stay informed.
Our priorities:
For more details on these priorities and other related activities, please visit the Governmental Relations page.
We kicked off the session with an energy-packed FIU Day in Tallahassee.
A delegation of students, administrators, faculty, and nine members of our Board of Trustees joined me in Tallahassee to advocate for our legislative priorities. We were also joined in Tallahassee by Football Coach Mario Cristobal, named Sun Belt Coach of the Year, and FIU student athlete T.Y. Hilton, last season?s Sun BeltConference Most Valuable Player.
The group was on hand when the Senate and House both passed resolutions honoring the entire FIU Football team for its Sun Belt Conference Championship title and Bowl Game win. The sponsors were Senator Anitere Flores, Representative Ana Rivas-Logan and Representative Jeanette Nuez, all FIU Alumnae. Please visit news.fiu.edu to learn more about FIU Day in Tallahassee.
The best news out of Tallahassee last week is not related to the budget but would impact our campuses directly. Two bills in the House and Senatewere introduced earlier this yearthat would allow guns on Florida?s college campuses. While thelegislation is still being discussed, both chambers have exempted campuses from the list of places where guns could be carried.
In the Federal arena, I would also like to call your attention to a budget matter with the potential to impact many of our students. A Congressional proposal is being discussed that would cut federal financial aid, commonly known as Pell Grants. We are concerned about this potential cut and are doing everything we can to help educate our elected officials about the detrimental effects this would have on more than 16,000 FIU students and many more in our community. A piece I wrote on this topic appeared recently in The Miami Herald.
Finally, I ask you to mark your calendar and plan to attend our Budget Town Hall meeting scheduled from 2 to 4 p.m. on May 19 at the MARC Pavilion, Modesto Maidique Campus. More details and a simulcast site at the Biscayne Bay Campus will follow. At this meeting we will discuss final decisions reached during the legislative session and how they will impact FIU.
Thank you for your interest in the legislative process and everything you do to keep FIU Worlds Ahead. For daily legislative news, follow FIUgov on Twitter or FIU Governmental Relations on Facebook.
Sincerely,
Mark B. Rosenberg
President

Gondola rides, learning a new language, falling in love: Deena and Vinny tell MTV News their plans for next season and beyond.

The third season of "Jersey Shore" wrapped on Thursday night, but Seaside's finest are already planning for the next installment of the show, which will take them to Italy. And that means the cast should probably brush up on their pregos and grazies before they land in the home of delicious spaghetti, fine leather goods and the Pope.
"Can't wait! I honestly can't wait to get there and see the place," Deena told MTV News this week. "For some reason, I really want to go on a gondola ride. Or I would like if we're in Rome, I would like to see the love fountain, so I'm thinking I'll steal a coin ... maybe I'll fall in love."
Meanwhile, her castmate Vinny told us he'd prepare for the next season of the hit reality series the same way he has for all of the past seasons.
"Preparing for Italy is pretty much preparing for any of the other seasons, trying to get in shape, trying to spend some time with my family, chill out, the quiet before the storm," he said. "I'm excited to be thrown right into the water with whatever language skills I have."
But the cast is also busier than ever with other projects and gigs.
Pauly D's ramping up for the debut of his own reality show, and fans can catch him spinning tunes at his DJ residency at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas.
Vinny got a plum role on "The Hard Times of RJ Berger" and revealed he's got some musical abilities, saying, "I dabble in music and it's something I do for fun and if it's good, it's good." No word on whether he'll pursue that any further, but Vinny did add that he'd love to pursue more acting. "My future is very open. I like to do scripted types of things," he told us.
Snooki and JWoww have followed a somewhat similar path: Both are published authors, and both have appeared on wrestling-type programs. Now there's chatter the two ladies might get their own show, casting them as reality-TV version of "Laverne and Shirley."
The Situation, of course, is already a budding entrepreneur, with a book and fitness DVD in stores and other deals in the pipeline. Earlier this year, the former "Dancing With the Stars" contestant began working on YOBI.tv's "Random Talent" Web series with British comedian Ben Green.
What did you think of the season finale of "Jersey Shore"? Tell us in the comments!

After months and months of buzz, rumors and hype, Zack Snyder's "Sucker Punch" is finally about to drop in theaters. MTV News has been on this film's case from day one and recently had the opportunity to catch up with the cast and director for a few in-depth chats.
First up, the lovely leading ladies addressed the film's most outrageous moments.
"I think, for me, when we're on the B-25 bomber plane and we're being chased by a dragon and I'm shooting at it," said Vanessa Hudgens, who plays Blondie. "It's pretty intense."
"I got to do this really fun green-screen moment where I was being lowered upside down on a harness 40 feet in the air," Jena Malone, a.k.a. Rocket in the film, explained. "I had to clear out my mag on my UMP [Universal Machine Pistol] while I was shooting all these robots that I was doing a double-flip over in the middle of a bullet train."
Jamie Chung, who plays Amber, added that part of the fun of working with green screen, particularly a scene in Mecca, was being able to use your imagination. When asked what she pulled from or where she went to prepare for those moments, Chung said she looked to her director.
"Into Zack Snyder's mind," she said. "That was the place that I went."
Emily Browning (Baby Doll) and Abbie Cornish (Sweet Pea) also touted the fight or "dance" sequences as the most unbelievable.
"My favorite thing to watch with my character is probably the first fight scene in Samurai world," Browning said. "People have said to me, 'Oh, so were you just standing there and there was a green screen and they made you look like you were jumping?' I said, 'No, I was on wires the whole time' jumping up and doing crazy things. We did almost a month of wirework at the end of the film. That's pretty cool to see. It's almost like a character in a video game or something."
"I definitely do love a lot of the fighting stuff," Cornish said. "For me the process of filming 'World War I' [an action sequence in the film] was incredible, because we all had solo action pieces so we got to indulge in those action pieces."
Cornish pointed out Snyder's use of high-speed cameras that were used to slow certain movements and make them stand out more onscreen.
"I love the moments where you see Vanessa's character flip her tomahawk and then that awesome throw that she does," she said. "And when Jenna flips her gun in slow motion, I love that stuff."
"That's probably the coolest moment," Browning agreed.

Bradley Cooper suspense flick also came out on top over 'Rango,' 'The Lincoln Lawyer.'
By Ryan J. Downey

The weekend's box-office receipts proved that Bradley Cooper doesn't need his "Hangover" or "A-Team" buddies to open a movie, Matthew McConaughey can impress the critics when he skips the easy romantic comedy cash, and the pair responsible for "Shaun of the Dead" have yet to exhaust their well of genre love letters as "Limitless," "The Lincoln Lawyer" and "Paul" hit theaters.
Cooper's "Limitless" was the #1 movie in America with a $19 million debut, according to studio estimates. It's the first flick to depend on Cooper's star power since the heartthrob actor hit it big in "The Hangover," the ensemble buddy romp that became the highest-grossing R-rated comedy ever. Overall, the box office was down 10 percent from last year, but this wasn't a bad debut.
Matthew McConaughey, known for going shirtless in several poorly reviewed but hugely successful romantic comedies, told the Toronto Star he took a pay cut to play an attorney reduced to living in his car in "The Lincoln Lawyer," and that move certainly paid off. "The Lincoln Lawyer" debuted at #4 with $13.4 million, and perhaps better still for the 41-year-old actor, it boasted an 81 percent critical average according to Rotten Tomatoes. By comparison, his "Fool's Gold" mustered a mere 10 percent with critics just a couple of years ago.
Lionsgate Films paid theaters the difference for 40,000 tickets that were redeemed through a Groupon promotion, where subscribers to the discount email service were able to pick up tickets to "The Lincoln Lawyer" for just $6. The studio reported that 190,000 tickets were sold this way, which means many folks will likely continue to redeem them throughout the film's run in theaters.
"Paul," the weekend's other new wide release, was #5 with $13.2 million. Written by and starring Nick Frost and Simon Pegg, "Paul" is a road trip movie about an alien that is as much a comedic love letter to classic sci-fi films like "E.T." and "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" as their previous movies "Hot Fuzz" and "Shaun of the Dead" paid homage to the action and zombie genres, respectively (and respectfully, for that matter). With a production budget of $40 million and worldwide appeal, the movie is sure to do fine for co-distributors Relativity and Universal.
Seth Rogen voices the namesake alien in "Paul" and the film's opening was stronger than that of his "Observe and Report" and his Kevin Smith-directed "Zack and Miri Make a Porno." It easily outdid "Hot Fuzz" as well, which debuted with $5.8 million in 2007 and went on to gross $23.6 million in the U.S. While 71 percent of critics enjoyed "Paul," it does bear the unfortunate distinction of being the worst reviewed of the Frost/Pegg collaborations next to the 91 percent earned by both "Fuzz" and "Shaun."
"Limitless" was the only new release that was able to beat "Rango." The blockbuster animated movie starring the voice talent of Johnny Depp as a lizard-turned-sheriff was #2 over the weekend with another $15 million in receipts for a $92 million total.
"Battle: Los Angeles" was #3 with $14.6 million for a $60.6 million total. "Twilight" director Catherine Hardwicke's gothic take on "Red Riding Hood" was #6 with $7.2 million for a two-week total of just $25.9 million. The movie's critical rating came in at just 11 percent.
The Matt Damon vehicle "The Adjustment Bureau" was #7 with $5.9 million for a $48.7 million total. Disney's "Mars Needs Moms," one of the biggest flops in recent memory, was #8 with just $5.3 million for a $15.4 million total against an estimated $150 million production budget. "Beastly," which had a release date close behind Alex Pettyfer's other teen-friendly flick, "I Am Number Four," was #9 with $3.3 million for a $22.2 million total. The comedy "Hall Pass" rounded out the top 10 with $2.6 million for a $39.5 million total.
Check out everything we've got on "Limitless," "The Lincoln Lawyer" and "Paul."

Katy Perry not only glams up for the new issue of Elle, but she also gets real. The singer — who is gearing up for a big performance on this Sunday's Grammy Awards — dishes on diva behavior, discusses her personal life and even reveals how much she weighs in the fashion magazine's latest cover story.
"I feel like I'm at a point in my life right now where I could potentially stick around," Perry says about her outlook on being a pop star. "I don't feel like a diva, but I think diva is a great and powerful word in the sense of what Beyoncé makes it. And maybe I can't be Beyoncé, but maybe I can be Cyndi Lauper. I mean be like her, not be her. That would just be weird."
The singer also admits to having some ambitions outside of the entertainment world. "I think some people will die on the stage, and I'm not so sure I want to do that. Like, I want to have kids!" she explains. "I'm totally fine with saying that. I think some people are scared because they're worried it's going to ruin their career, but I want to live a full life."
That full life, these days, includes her hubby, Russell Brand, who she says is her perfect better half. "Everything clicked really fast. We kind of instantly got past all the surfacey stuff. And ever since then, there hasn't been a dull moment," she says. "We both needed balance, and we give that to each other. It wasn't about me taming him, which is what everyone always says — it was about timing."
Perry doesn't hold back at all, revealing details about her weight that very few celebrities seem willing to share with the world. "I was shaped like a square at one time. I was! I'm generally around 130 pounds, which is totally fine for me," she confesses. "But when I was a kid, I was the same height and weighed more like 145. And I had enormous boobs that I didn't know what to do with, so I wore minimizers, which were not cute. Those thick-ass straps! I got made fun of for the over-the-shoulder boulder holder ... and all I wanted was to look like Kate Moss. Little did I know ... that these things would come in handy someday."

Voting in band's second-round matchup against Adele is now live on the Newsroom blog.

In 2010, MTV News threw Tokio Hotel into our inaugural Musical March Madness tournament almost as an afterthought, sticking them with a #16 seed and putting them up against #1 Coldplay with the assumption that they'd probably lose.
Only they didn't.
In fact, thanks to the undying support of their fanbase, Tokio Hotel crushed Coldplay, and began a remarkable two-week run that saw them knock off heavily favored bands like Radiohead, Vampire Weekend and Owl City before losing to eventual champions Coheed and Cambria in a controversial Final Four matchup.
In short, we grossly underestimated TH, so when it came time to unveil our 2011 MMM bracket, we made sure that they made the cut ... this time as a #14 seed (when will the selection committee ever give them the respect they deserve?!?). And, picking up where they left off last year, they rolled over Crystal Bowersox in the opening round, and now are heavy favorites in their second-round matchup against Adele ... which just so happens to open for voting on Thursday (March 24).
So, with Adele on their schedule now, and a potential rematch against Coheed looming in the MMM Championship (it's April 4, just like the NCAA's!), we reached out to Tokio Hotel for comment on their tournament success. And though they're currently hard at work on the follow-up to their 2009 Humanoid album, the guys took the time to respond ... and thank their fans for their support.
"Thank you so much to our fans," frontman Bill Kaulitz said. "Although we locked ourselves in the studio and didn't release a new record for a long time, you guys are still supporting us in such a strong way, that's incredible! Thank you!"
Can Tokio Hotel finally hoist the MMM trophy? They certainly seem primed for a deep run in the 2011 tourney, but, ultimately, it'll be up to their fans to decide their fate ... voting is now open on the Newsroom blog, and you can help them finally realize their championship dreams. And hopefully get a little revenge against Coheed, too.
MTV's Musical March Madness has moved on to the second round! Voting is now open on the Newsroom blog and will continue until Sunday, when we'll reach the Sweet 16! All winners are determined by your votes, so if your favorite act is still alive, it's up to you to guide them to glory. You can rally the troops on Twitter using the hashtag #MMM — but get ready, things only get tougher from here on out!

'Max is going after Miles in a big way,' Jayson Blair tells MTV News of tonight's sumo-suit throwdown.
By Vanessa WhiteWolf
Season one of MTV's "The Hard Times of RJ Berger" ended with a dramatic cliffhanger that saw RJ leaving his lifelong crush, Jenny, to lose his virginity to friend Lily ... in a hospital bed before she flat-lined.
But when MTV News spoke with the "Hard Times" stars, they told us what they really can't wait to see on Thursday's season-two premiere is what happened after a more violent altercation.
"At the very end of season one, Miles beats up Max at the prom," Jareb Dauplaise, who plays Miles, reminded us. "That's the last time you see Miles, [he's] straddling Max Owens and just punching him where you shouldn't hit a man. So in the opening, you have Miles facing the music with the Max Owens beatdown."
Jayson Blair, who plays the unlucky Max, said, "In the season premiere you find Max very upset with having his balls punched in, and there will be hell to pay for that. And he's going after Miles in a big way — in a sumo suit."
Dauplaise clarified, "Yes, we end up throwing on the sumo suits and doing a professional wrestling event for charity."
"I'm going to kill him for a good cause, it's for charity. So whenever charity's involved, it makes it all right," Blair laughed.
Whether or not Max and Miles can resolve their differences in the ring, Blair told us he's really focused on what the show can accomplish in its second season.
"I honestly had fears about where we were going to go in the second season. I was like, 'We've already pissed off all the parents.' The comedy is so big and in-your-face, and for this show to be successful, it has to go in that direction and break boundaries, pushing those extremes," Blair explained. "When I saw those scripts for season two, I said, 'Yeah!' We went there in a big way and I'm so excited about it."
Dauplaise, meanwhile, is hoping his character gets some shine of his own in the near future. "Miles is the sidekick, watching RJ get the girl of his dreams in season one, he gets to lose his virginity in season one — Miles is sitting on the side, he wants the same things. Hopefully, we turn it around. I'm excited to see where Miles goes. I want Miles to get laid," he laughed.
Don't miss "The Hard Times of RJ Berger" season premiere Thursday at 11 p.m. following the "Jersey Shore" season finale on MTV.

Songwriter Sean Garrett says former 'NSYNC star's success inspires Bieber's new project and also dishes on Beyoncé's album.

Justin Bieber may have declined the chance to join Justin Timberlake's label, but according to a songwriter in the know, the former 'NSYNC crooner is the inspiration for the teen sensation's upcoming album.
Songwriter Sean "The Pen "Garrett, who has been working with Bieber on the follow-up to the chart-ruling My World 2.0., spoke with Billboard about the direction for the teen superstar's forthcoming album, saying the project will feature more grown-up fare.
"What we're trying to do with Justin is to segue him into young adulthood," Garrett said of the project, which is also slated to feature production from hitmaker Christopher "Tricky" Stewart. "The one great thing about Justin Bieber is the fact that his fans are going to grow with him. So we want all the fans that started out with him to still be intrigued and excited about him, but we want to also stretch out a little bit and make the fans that are 22-23 years old love Justin as well. When Justin Timberlake went from the last album of *N Sync to his first solo album -- I want to say [we're aiming for] that level. That's the bar for the type of song, that level of 'Cry Me a River,' big records."
Garrett, who has crafted records for stars like Chris Brown and Bieber's mentor Usher, also said he's hard at work on Beyoncé's next project. However, the songwriter didn't divulge too much information, only revealing that he's "been working with her extremely hard ... she's my favorite."
While Garrett said the plan for his next outing is to angle Bieber toward a swiftly maturing audience, Bieber himself has refused to categorize his music, insisting to MTV News in December that he's just focused on creating quality records.
"Whatever comes out of my mouth is just what you guys are going to hear," Bieber explained of his hits. "I don't know, it's not a specific type of music. Whatever music I write, I wouldn't say I'm pop or R&B or country or anything: I would just say it's just good music,"
What do you think Justin Bieber's new music is going to sound like? Let us know in the comments!

USC President C. L. Max Nikias on Wednesday held up two engraved, long golden chains - an honor presented to only one other person in USC?s 131-year-history.
Slipping the heavy, shiny chains over the heads of Dana and David Dornsife, he told the philanthropists and humanitarians:
?It is now my profound privilege to bestow upon both of you the University Medallion.?
The Trojan Marching Band entered the Bovard Auditorium stage playing "Reign of Troy." The lights dimmed and a backdrop resembling a marble wall was virtually ?etched? to read: USC Dana and David Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences. (To view a video tribute to the Dornsifes, go to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RBQ6dIi2s9M)
?This is what you call serious bling,? Dana Dornsife said, holding up her medallion, which is identical to the one worn by the university?s president. The ceremony honored the Dornsifes for their $200 million unrestricted gift to USC College ? the largest naming gift in the history of higher education for a college of letters, arts and sciences.
?'How could you make it unrestricted?? ? David Dornsife said many people have asked him.
?It?s real simple,? said Dornsife, a 1965 USC alumnus in business and chairman of the Herrick Corporation, a steel fabrication contractor. ?We think we understand the people who are going to administer the gift. We have a lot of faith in them. And if it?s a good friend of mine, I say, ?They don?t tell me how to put a steel building up. And I don?t tell them how to run a university.? ?
Also unveiled was a bronze plaque displayed at the entrance to Bovard, engraved with portraits of Dana and David Dornsife and naming the USC benefactors University Medallion recipients, dated March 23, 2011. Directly across is an engraved plaque with the image of the only other person given the honor, Walter H. Annenberg.
?[Dana and David Dornsife?s] plaque is located there because of the central role the College plays in the academic and cultural life of this university,? Nikias said of the Bovard entryway.
The event included a processional march of College faculty members, senior administrators, the College Board of Councilors and USC trustees.
Many of the university?s deans walked across the stage, led by Howard Gillman, dean of the newly named USC Dana and David Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences, comprised of 10,000 students, 700 faculty members and 600 staffers. Gillman oversees the College?s 33 academic departments in humanities, social sciences and sciences, and 31 research centers and institutes.
?At every renowned institution of higher education the foundational work of inquiry and discovery takes place within this community, within the disciplines of the humanities, social sciences, and sciences,? said Gillman, who acted as host. ?To enter this world is to encounter the best that has ever been thought, or created, or discovered.?
With the USC Afro Latin American Jazz Ensemble playing in the background, USC Board of Trustees chairman Edward P. Roski, Jr., stepped forward. He said the audience was sharing a transforming moment in the university?s history.
?Dana and David are people who understand that education is the key to human progress,? Roski said. ?They understand that although education does deliver personal rewards and growth, at the end of the day education is not about me. It is about we. What matters is how you and I use our knowledge for the greater good, for our communities, our fellow humans and the world.?
Speaking before the crowd, School of Philosophy director Scott Soames, one of 23 USC faculty members who hold the Distinguished Professor title, said that the Dornsife?s past gifts to brain science were visionary. ?Their present gift to the College of Letters, Arts, and Sciences reflects a level of understanding few can match,? he said. ?It is the College that is the heart of the university, combining the ancient disciplines of philosophy and mathematics with the great engines of modernity - the physical, biological, and social sciences - while embracing the study of language, literature, art, history, religion and culture - in short, all that makes us human.?
Sociology Ph.D. candidate Radheeka Jayasundera said she spoke on behalf of students when she thanked the Dornsifes.
?Because of your generosity, students like me from developing countries who have very few resources are able to come to the U.S. to get a higher education at a great university like USC,? Jayasundera said. ?And live to our fullest potential.?
With University Professor Kevin Starr?s baritone voice moderating, a video was shown telling the story of the Dornsifes, beginning with Harold Dornsife, David?s father, arriving at USC from Indiana in 1934 with 18 cents in his pocket. David Dornsife met his future wife, Ester, also a USC student. The couple later became some of USC?s most generous benefactors in chemical engineering, chemistry and neuroscience. They established the Harold W. Dornsife Chair in Neurosciences and were lead donors of the Hedco Neuroscience Building. Harold ?38 died in March 1999 and Ester ?41 died in January 2000.
?Dave, I know that your parents, who are both Trojans, are looking down on us from above,? Nikias said during the event. ?And I have no doubt that, right now, they are smiling.?
David Dornsife, a USC trustee, is vice president of the Hedco Foundation and chairman of the USC Brain and Creativity Institute board. Dana Dornsife is a board member of the same institute and the USC-Huntington Institutes. She is also president and founder of the Lazarex Cancer Foundation. The couple funded a cognitive neuroscience imaging center named after them.
After Nikias presented the Dornsifes with a handcrafted, calligraphical citation acknowledging the breadth of their contributions, Dana Dornsife said she wanted to recognize USC?s faculty and administrators.
?They are extraordinary,? she said. ?But really what we?ve been touched by most is the outstanding students. And students are what this is all about. They make us extraordinarily proud. We love USC. We love the Trojan Family. Fight on!?
After the ceremony, the Trojan Marching Band led guests to a tented picnic at Alumni Park.
?Someone has believed in the College enough to give us a name,? said Lily Mathison, a psychology senior, as she handed out T-shirts marking the historic event. ?Viterbi has one. Marshall has one. Just saying the College makes you kind of feel left out. We?re not left out anymore.?

For what promises to be one of the most bizarre and riveting legal proceedings in years, a Los Angeles judge ruled on Monday that a television camera will be allowed in the courtroom when Michael Jackson's doctor goes on trial for involuntary manslaughter.
Reuters reported that Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Michael Pastor, approved the presence of a camera in the trial of Dr. Conrad Murray as long as it does not interfere with the proceedings in the closely watched case.
The judge asked for the "absolute least-intrusive placement" of a TV camera in the courtroom, but blocked cameras from documenting jury selection.
Pastor also announced that he would bump up the opening date of the trail by four days to March 24, at which point jury selection will begin. Murray, who faces up to four years in prison if convicted, has pleaded not guilty to the charges, and the trial is expected to last around six weeks.
Cardiologist Murray was hired to be Jackson's personal physician in the run-up to the King of Pop's planned 50-date comeback series of shows at London's O2 arena in the summer of 2009. The doctor told police that he provided Jackson, 50, with sedatives and the surgical anesthetic propofol in order to combat the singer's chronic insomnia. He said he did so on the morning of June 25, 2009, when Jackson died of what a coroner deemed acute propofol poisoning.
TMZ reported on Tuesday (February 8) that Murray's lawyers plan to argue that Jackson was already in weak health before he died and that it's unfair to blame propofol for his passing. Unnamed sources close to the case told the gossip site that at the time of his death, Jackson's body was already failing him in part because concert promoter AEG Live had "driven [him] over the edge" with a rigorous rehearsal schedule for the shows.
Murray's lawyers reportedly plan to call witnesses to say that Jackson was not showing up for rehearsals and when he did he showed "clear signs" of frail health. They also reportedly plan to argue that it was Jackson who administered the final, fatal dose of propofol to himself while Murray was out of the room.

Music industry urges other stars who played for Libyan dictator's family to donate their earnings.

Just days after singer Nelly Furtado announced that she planned to donate to charity money she received for playing a concert for the family of Libyan dictator Moammar Gadhafi, a spokesperson for Beyoncé said that the "Halo" singer had already done the same.
Documents obtained by the WikiLeaks website revealed that stars including Beyoncé, Usher and Mariah Carey had played big-paycheck gigs for Gadhafi. On Monday, Rolling Stone magazine reported that the industry was urging the stars (noting that rapper 50 Cent had also played such gigs) to return the money they earned for the concerts.
"They've done it for tons of artists," an unnamed music-business source told the magazine about lavish parties by Gadhafi's son, Muatassim, which are reportedly often "jammed" with supermodels. "Those guys are all over the world."
On Wednesday, a rep for Beyoncé — who played a New Year's Eve gig for Muatassim with Usher on the Caribbean island of St. Barts in 2009 — told the Huffington Post that the singer had long ago resolved the matter.
"All monies paid to Beyoncé for her performance at a private party at Nikki Beach St. Barts on New Year's Eve 2009, including the commissions paid to her booking agency, were donated to the earthquake relief efforts for Haiti over a year ago," her publicist said. "Once it became known that the third-party promoter was linked to the Qaddafi family, the decision was made to put that payment to a good cause."
The money was donated to the Clinton-Bush Haiti Fund, established in the wake of last year's devastating earthquake, and a spokesperson for the fund confirmed that it received the $1 million check in the weeks after the January 2010 earthquake.
According to her official Twitter feed, Canadian pop star Nelly Furtado confirmed on Monday that she once did a show for the dictator's family and now plans to donate the money to charity. "In 2007, I received 1million$ from the Gadhafi clan to perform a 45 min. show for guests at a hotel in Italy," she wrote on Monday. "I am going to donate the $."
The star-studded shows were part of the extravagant lifestyle of the dictator's sons, whose splashy parties and out-of-control spending have angered their countrymen, many of whom wallow in poverty as the Gadhafi clan benefits from the country's oil riches.

For the album, Ke$ha hooked up with a number of dance DJs and producers, as well as a few notable guests. In addition to the new music, Ke$ha is also set to release the music video for her latest single, "Blow." She tweeted about filming it in late January. On Tuesday, the singer shared that she saw some footage from the video, writing, "Just saw the final cut of my new video for BLOW all I can say is HOT DAMN."
Currently, Ke$ha is on the road for her Get $leazy Tour, which she kicked off last week in Portland, Oregon. She's set to wrap up her tour in Las Vegas on May 7.

'Sucker Punch' star also opens up about declining 'Twilight' audition.

The role might have recently gone to Jennifer Lawrence, but there was a point in time when "Sucker Punch" star Emily Browning might have played District 12 champion Katniss Everdeen in the upcoming Lionsgate adaptation of "The Hunger Games."
"I read for ['Hunger Games'] a couple of times, but I've never read the book, to be honest -- which I know is terrible of me," Browning said in an interview with the Playlist. "I was nervous about it."
Despite the fact Browning started out her acting career as one of the leads in an adaptation of a popular children's series, it was that experience that turned her off from moving on to starring in the young-adult genre. She admitted that there was a period of time between when she filmed 2004's "Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events" and when she agreed to come onboard Friday's "Sucker Punch" that she seriously considered quitting acting altogether.
It was during that time that she found out "Twilight" author Stephenie Meyer said she would be the perfect Bella Swan for the upcoming adaptation of the novel, but Browning wasn't ready to commit to a franchise.
"I was just exhausted, and I was like, 'I'm sorry, but I just can't sign onto a trilogy right now,' " Browning told MTV News in 2009, after she finished "The Uninvited." "To be honest, if I had gone on to do the film straight after 'The Uninvited,' I would not have been a good Bella . and I'm hoping people realize that now."
But it was the fact that she was vilified for reportedly turning down the "Twilight" role that caused Browning to remain so hush-hush about trying out for "Hunger Games."
"It's always hard for me to talk about these kinds of things, because I know there was a big deal with 'Twilight' and my involvement with people wanting me to do 'Twilight,' so I'm always like, 'Oh, people love this book so much, I don't want to get involved, I don't want to talk about it!' " Browning explained. "I read for ['Hunger Games'] a couple of times, but I think every single girl in Hollywood read for it a couple of times, to be honest."

'I think Henry just has this innocence,' filmmaker said of his choice for 'Man of Steel.'
By Kara Warner
One drawback in making comic book movies, particularly those that involve one of the most recognizable characters of all time, is that no matter how excited fans are about the project, the people involved with the film aren't allowed to talk about it.
Case in point, Zack Snyder's super (pun intended) highly-anticipated "Superman" reboot, tentatively titled "Man of Steel." When MTV News caught up with the director during the press day for his epic action fantasy "Sucker Punch" on Friday (March 18), we did our best to squeeze some information out of him about the direction in which he plans to take the film. But try as we might, Snyder's lips were mostly sealed.
"It's a super-secret thing!" he said after a few failed attempts at getting some scoop. "It's like building a stealth bomber."
That said, despite our seemingly stealthy line of questioning, we were only able to eke out a few thoughts from Snyder regarding his choice for the film's lead actor, Henry Cavill, versus his second choice, "True Blood" actor Joe Manganiello.
"Henry's just ... I love Joe too, by the way," Snyder said. "Really he was the only other guy I was thinking of, to be honest, other than Henry. But in the end, I think Henry just has this innocence too [in addition to the look and physicality required for the role], he has both, which is tricky," he explained. "Superman needs the teeniest bit of that. Not to be overt, but you like it to be there ever so slightly. I mean, he grew up in Kansas, that's just true, so you need a little of that [innocence]."
Regarding Snyder's rumored plans to make his new Superman more physical, the "300" director once again laughed at our detail-oriented line of questioning.
"I can't answer that!" he exclaimed, and then complimented our detail-digging efforts. "Because if I say, that is what will be the thing [that everyone will run with]."
Check out everything we've got on "Superman: Man of Steel."

'It's a celebration not only of Tribe, but of the culture,' Q-Tip tells MTV News, despite his disapproval of some aspects of the documentary.

A Tribe Called Quest's Q-Tip

Although A Tribe Called Quest felt some of the business behind Michael Rapaport's documentary on the group was Industry Rule #4080 (read: shady), they still want fans to go see the film. "Beats, Rhymes & Life: The Travels of A Tribe Called Quest" is a window into not only the career of one of hip-hop's most influential acts, they said, but also the culture itself.
"I encourage everybody still to see this film," Q-Tip told MTV News. "Not only because it's about us, but it's really about the hip-hop movement, man. It really, really is, that's on everything. It's a celebration not only of Tribe, but of the culture. Of what goes into making records: the ups, the downs, the switching of the times. It's a beautiful story about hip-hop. He really did a great job, and I commend him for it, still. He really did an amazing job."
According to Q-Tip, he and Tribe just want to get the story totally correct.
"Again, this is just another warning shot ... a flare coming from the cannon so that they can get this thing right," Q-Tip said.
The MC also expressed the necessity for seminal rap artists and groups to tell their stories on their own terms. "Everybody out there in hip-hop who's crossed that threshold, who's done work, who has a history — whether it be Queen Latifah or Rakim or Wu-Tang or Jay-Z or Nas or Ice Cube or N.W.A — yo, tell y'all own stories," Q-Tip said, looking into the camera for emphasis. "Be in charge of your own stories, you hear me?"
The Queens MC then likened rappers to griots: West African storytellers who share their tales via oral tradition.
"We gotta pass our own stories on," Q-Tip continued. "This is part of our tradition as African-Americans predominantly. Let's tell our own stories. We can let everybody come in and participate with us in this, but don't fall for the Hollywood, nobody's ever done this before. We hip-hop, man. This is a hip-hop nation. We crack the mold, we break the rules. We define this culture that we in right now, this Western culture, the sh-- that's moving around the world, whether it be Tribe to Lil Wayne, Drake to Kanye, I don't care. This hip-hop sh-- is our sh--, and when we start moving in, control your stories, man. Tell your stories — that's what I learned from this."
Will you check out the Tribe documentary? Let us know in the comments.

'Justin Bieber: Never Say Never' has outgrossed MJ's 'This Is It' in U.S.

Michael Jackson may have dubbed himself the King of Pop, but the late icon didn't hold the box-office crown for long. Less than a year after the posthumous MJ documentary "This Is It" became the most successful concert-themed film in U.S. history, Justin Bieber is poised to snatch the mantle.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, "Justin Bieber: Never Say Never" has earned $72.2 million in domestic box office so far, passing Jackson's $72.1 million haul. And while Bieber has racked up those impressive numbers in just six weeks, he's got a long way to go before he laps the global receipts for the MJ doc.
"This Is It" has grossed $189.1 million overseas for a global total of $261.2 million. Music films don't typically play well overseas, and THR noted that "Never Say Never" has grossed a more modest $10.8 million overseas so far, with Paramount executives predicting that it could top out around $20 million internationally.
The impressive U.S. numbers were likely goosed by the re-release of the film recently with 40 additional minutes of bonus footage from director Jon M. Chu. Bieber still has a little way to go to climb the list of the top-grossing documentaries of all time. "Never Say Never" is currently stalled out at the #3 position, around $5 million behind "March of the Penguins," according to Box Office Mojo, and well short of the all-time record held by Michael Moore's "Fahrenheit 9/11," which has taken in $119.1 million to date.
Bieber set off a classic MJ-style fan frenzy a few weeks ago when he visited Liverpool, England, for his world tour. And just a week later, he posed with his new wax figure at London's Madame Tussauds, checking off another item on the list of milestones to an MJ-like career.
